I am not most people.

Applying an analytical mind and the few pieces of marketing psychology that can be picked up from having a father who religiously watched business television when I was growing up allows me to get a decent amount of extra mileage out of my auction listings.  A gold here and there can add up quite quickly, so in the interest of expanding your in-game wallets, I’m going to share a few tricks.

The 1-Copper Undercut: If you’re selling something in a relatively stable market, and you notice that your competition is charging whole values (i.e. their auction is listed for 50G even) consider undercutting them by a single copper (your auction would be listed for 49G99S99C).  The marketing psychology here is that people genuinely believe that they are now paying 49G rather than 50G, and thus your item is more likely to sell.  After all, when was the last time you bought something for $20 when you could get it for $19.99 instead?

Lucky Number 7: This was one of those business television tips I was talking about.  Market studies have shown that people feel less threatened by the number 7, and are thus more likely to buy if it is featured prominently in the pricing.  Let’s say you get a BOE rare weapon drop, like a Thornstone Sledgehammer.  Instead of selling it for 45 gold (standard going rate on my server) I would put it up at 47G if it was the only one up there.  There you go, an extra 2g.  Do this across a few auctions, and you’ll notice the extra gold.

Always Be First: By default, the WoW Auction House sorts listings with the same buyout by current bid price.  I got sick of undercutting my competitors and hoping the next guy down didn’t undercut me and cause a domino effect that crashed the market, so I started gaming the system a little bit.  By lowering your minimum bid price by a silver or two, you can match your competition’s buyout price and still sell your item before them.

Those tricks should pad your gold purse a bit, but make sure to head back to the WoW Auction House homepage and bookmark it for further reading, there’s gonna be a lot more good stuff coming down the pipes over the weeks to come.

1. Download and install Auctioneer from Curse Gaming (Link)
2. Scan the auction house at least twice a day for at least 3 or 4 days.  More scans = more accurate data.
3. Run the BottomScanner module to find items priced below their usual price points.
4. Buy them and relist them for a profit.
5. Collect the gold.

There’s obviously a bit more to it than that, and I’ll be making a video later on to show you guys the exact details of the process, but if you want to jump in and get started now, those steps give you a solid starting point.

The cool thing about Auctioneer is that if you are willing to take the time to set it up with accurate data and you do consistent scans, you can make around 100 gold in 10 minutes of work.  I don’t really have the patience for grinding or doing dailies, so that’s pretty much perfect for me.

Anyway, I’ll hook you guys up with some more info on this method later, including the specific Auctioneer settings I use, as well as a video showing everything from how to perform a basic scan, right down to me actually giving you an over the shoulder view of the method in action.

I personally believe that using the auction house is the quickest way to make gold in WoW.  I usually don’t spend more than 30 minutes per day playing the auction house in WoW and I come out with a few hundred gold on average.  It lets me keep my gear and enchants up to date when I’m leveling characters, and helps me stay stocked up for raids on my level 80 characters.

I didn’t really think I was doing anything special until I started a new character on a new (to me) server to play with a buddy from work.  He hit 80 on his Paladin and was asking in guild if he could borrow a couple of hundred gold so he could afford dual specialization, and I offered to loan it to him.  He was blown away!  He had no idea how a level 22 mage could possibly afford to loan someone a couple of hundred gold.

Immediately the questions started coming.  Did I buy the gold?  Did I transfer a character over to the server that he didn’t know about?  Was I scamming people?  I rode out the wave of questions and when he couldn’t think of anything else to accuse me of, we had the following exchange.

Me:  “Don’t you use the auction house?”

Him:  “Yeah, sure, everyone uses the auction house, but what are you auctioning to make that much gold?”

Me:  “Well… Pretty much anything, as long as it makes a profit.”

Him:  “… Teach me.”

At that point, I figured he couldn’t be the only one struggling to get dual-spec or epic flying, so I thought if I’m going to type it out, I might as well let the whole World of Warcraft see it, or at least anyone willing to put the effort into finding it.
